Jumper, sweater, cardigan: what should you choose and how?

Jumper, sweater, cardigan: what should you choose and how?
Table of contents

It’s easy to get confused by all these names: jumper, sweater, sweatshirt, cardigan, polo, turtleneck... These are actually different things, and it’s worth knowing the difference. In this article, we’ll clarify the main types of knitwear and explain how to choose a quality sweater and how to style each type. In the end, we’ll also find out which knitwear piece is the most versatile – the one every man should have in his wardrobe.

Key terms and definitions: cardigan, jumper, sweater

First, let’s understand what the most common knitwear terms mean:

    • “Kofta” / cardigan – in everyday speech this is a generic word, similar to saying “pants.” People often use “kofta” to refer to any knitted top: a sweater, a jumper, a cardigan, etc. In other words, it’s not a specific garment type, it’s just a casual way to call any knitted pullover.

    • Jumper – a broad term for knitwear without a front opening, pulled over the head. Jumpers come in different cuts, but most often “jumper” refers to a relatively lightweight sweater. Jumpers can have different necklines (crew neck, V-neck, etc.) and different thicknesses, but overall they are usually thinner than classic winter sweaters.

    • Sweater – also a broad term, and it often overlaps with “jumper.” The main difference is that a sweater is usually thicker and denser than a jumper and traditionally comes with a higher neck. “Sweater” typically refers to warm knitwear for the cold season – for example, heavy winter knits made of wool, often with texture, braids, or cable patterns.

Now that we’ve sorted out the terminology, let’s move on to specific types of knitwear and some practical tips on how to wear them.

Turtleneck – a thin fitted sweater with a high neck

A turtleneck is a thin, close-fitting knit with a high collar that covers the neck. A classic turtleneck has a long collar that’s usually folded over twice. It’s an elegant wardrobe basic.

Here are a few things worth knowing when choosing and wearing a turtleneck:

    • Collar and seams. Many turtlenecks have a double collar (you wear it folded in half). A common question is: can you not fold it, but instead tuck the collar inward? It depends on the construction. If the top seam of the collar is finished in a way that allows it to be worn unfolded, then yes – you can experiment with tucking it in. There are also turtlenecks with a single, shorter collar (no fold-over), but they’re less universal and tend to hold their shape worse.
    • Neck comfort. Some men say a high collar “rubs” or feels tight around the neck. What if the turtleneck feels uncomfortable at first? You basically have two choices: either don’t wear turtlenecks at all, or give yourself time to get used to it. Usually after 15–20 minutes you stop noticing the light pressure: the knit stretches and adapts to you, and your skin adjusts. If that never happens, this piece might simply “not be yours,” and you’re better off with a different type of neckline.
    • Fit on the body. A classic turtleneck is almost always cut close to the body. Fine, elastic wool or cotton should gently follow the torso, lightly defining your shape. That doesn’t mean it should be skin-tight like thermal underwear – but an overly loose silhouette doesn’t work here either. If you see an extremely loose, baggy turtleneck, it’s better not to buy it: it tends to look sloppy and throw off your proportions.
    • Thin vs heavy turtleneck. There are also chunky turtleneck sweaters – essentially the same idea, but made of thicker wool yarn. A heavier knit with a high collar is warmer and often has a textured knit or pattern. The texture adds visual depth and volume. Chunky turtlenecks are usually worn as a warm second layer in cold weather, whereas a thin, smooth turtleneck can act as the first layer (instead of a shirt) in a more dressed-up look.

How to style a turtleneck? Thin, solid-colour turtlenecks are extremely versatile. You can wear them with tailored trousers and suits as an alternative to a shirt and tie. For example, a slim black or dark grey turtleneck under a fitted blazer is a refined cold-weather look. A lightweight turtleneck also pairs beautifully with a standalone blazer or a casual jacket, and you can wear it on its own with trousers, jeans, or chinos as an elegant alternative to a long-sleeve tee or polo.

Chunky high-neck sweaters are usually worn in more relaxed, casual outfits. They work well with heavier textures: tweed blazers, wool overcoats, utility jackets, parkas. You can wear a thick turtleneck over a shirt (letting the shirt collar peek out) or over a T-shirt, depending on the mood.

    Long-sleeve polo knit

A long-sleeve polo knit is another type of lightweight knitwear. Unlike a turtleneck, it has a fold-over collar and a short button placket, like a classic polo shirt – but it’s made of warm knit fabric. Knit polos are often made of fine wool, cotton, or blends of the two.

    Key features and styling tips:

    • Fit and cut. The sleeve and body of a knit polo are cut similarly to a turtleneck: it should sit relatively close to the body, not too loose. Typically, a knit polo has a semi-fitted silhouette. The collar is turned down like on a classic shirt, just softer.
    • How to wear it. A knit polo is an excellent base for smart casual and everyday looks. It pairs with chinos, wool trousers, or jeans. You can throw on a blazer, cardigan, or a lightweight jacket over it. But we wouldn’t recommend wearing this type of polo under a very structured suit jacket – a turtleneck works better there. The soft polo collar is less formal and can crumple under a tailored lapel, which looks messy. So wear your knit polo either on its own or with an unstructured casual blazer. It also looks great layered under a vest in cooler weather.
    • Design and colour. Knit polos can be smooth or textured. Smooth looks more understated; textured looks more interesting. Colour-wise, you have a lot of freedom. If this is your first piece of this kind, go for a versatile shade: navy, grey, beige. But don’t be afraid of colour. A teal or terracotta knit polo can be a strong accent in your outfit. The main rule: balance it with a calmer bottom. Bold knitwear pairs well with neutral grey, navy, or brown trousers.

Lightweight jumper: crew neck or V-neck?

A separate knitwear category is lightweight jumpers without a collar. They come with different necklines. The two most common are: the crew neck and the V-neck.

    Which one should you choose?

    • Crew neck – universal and always relevant. A thin crew-neck jumper is an excellent wardrobe basic. You can wear it on bare skin or layered over a shirt (so only the shirt collar stands out slightly). It works with jeans, chinos, smart trousers, and under an everyday blazer or casual jacket. It’s not ideal with a formal suit – that’s usually too casual for a business setting. But in daily life this jumper is a lifesaver when you want to look clean and put-together without looking too formal.
    • V-neck. A V-neck jumper lets you show more of the layer underneath – a tie, a shirt, even a T-shirt. A V-neck creates clean lines and visually elongates the neck, which makes the whole look appear sharper and more structured.

In a modern wardrobe, a good V-neck looks refined and intentional, especially if you choose a denser knit, soft wool, or cashmere. It combines easily with shirts, T-shirts, or thin turtlenecks, adding an intelligent, layered feel. For autumn, it’s worth choosing neutral or muted shades: charcoal, navy, beige, or chocolate brown.

Which knitwear piece is the most versatile?

Among all knitwear types, the undisputed number one is the classic slim turtleneck. This is the true must-have. Why?

    • It works with almost anything. A turtleneck fits both classic looks – with a suit, under a blazer, with an overcoat – and casual looks: with jeans, a leather jacket, a cardigan. You can wear it at work instead of a shirt, and later in the evening as a standalone piece with denim, and you’ll look appropriate in both cases.
    • It flatters the body. A well-fitted turtleneck visually slims the silhouette and emphasizes the shoulders and chest. Unlike a shirt, it doesn’t add bulk with extra folds. The neckline draws attention to the face. Many actors choose a black turtleneck for photoshoots because it’s a very flattering look.
    • It’s comfortable in cool weather. The high collar protects your neck, so you can often skip a scarf. Quality wool keeps you warm, wicks moisture, and breathes to maintain comfort.
    • It’s timeless. The turtleneck is classic with an intellectual vibe. It’s associated with artists, directors, and the creative and business elite of the 1960s – and at the same time, it still looks modern today. This is quiet, timeless elegance that never goes out of style.

So, if you’re just starting to update your autumn-winter wardrobe, we genuinely recommend making your first purchase a turtleneck in a core colour: black, charcoal, navy, or deep red – whatever suits you best. There’s a good chance it will become your most-worn knit, simply because you can build so many different outfits around it.

We hope this guide helped you understand the difference between a jumper and a sweater – and how to style each type of knitwear. Experiment with your looks, choose quality pieces in our YARMICH boutiques, and wear them with confidence.
